Red Zdreus (born Miky Mongelli in 1987) is a young artist from South of Italy who works in various media including painting, illustration, graphic and interactive installation. He lives and works in Bari, where he graduated in Visual Arts at Academy of Fine Arts. His production is influenced by underground cartoons and street art, bewitched by the magnetic ignitions of advertising and marketing, and constantly involved in an amused perusal of human being. His “creatures” are not aliens or monster, but just a merciless different repetition of the urban fauna that daily roams our street, seats in our buses, sleeps under our roof : blind “ultra-violet” people.

Red Zdreus Nato Miki Mongelli nel 1987, Red Zdreus è un giovane artista del sud Italia che lavora con svariati mezzi tra cui pittura, illustrazione, grafica ed installazioni interattive. Vive e lavora a Bari, dove si è diplomato in Arti Visive all’Accademia di Belle Arti. La sua produzione è stata influenzata dai cartoon indipendenti e dalla street art, stregato dai meccanismi della pubblicità e del marketing, e costantemente coinvolto in un divertita rilettura dell’essere umano. Le sue creature non sono alieni, nè mostri, ma solamente un’impietosa ripetizione della fauna urbana che quotidianamente vaga per le nostre strade, siede nei nostri autobus, dorme sotto i nostri tetti: gente cieca “ultra-violetta”.

Elena Rapa Elena Rapa was born in Fano in 1978. She lives and works in Milano. In the last ten years she has exhibited both in public (Città Sant'Angelo Museum in Pescara; SPAC Center of comtemporary arts in Pesaro-Urbino) and private spaces (group artshows in a number of italian art galleries).

Elena Rapa transposes on paper and canvas her personal and multicoloured imaginative world. She scratches with ink and acrylics the faces and the feelings of weird characters, funny animals that fill up a piebald and uncontaminated nature. Her illustrations tell about complicated stories, jazzy adult tales where joy, melancholy, fear and love can be found. In this so bizarre universe, made up with brilliant brush strokes, one upon the other, there's a recall to the art of Bosh, Goya and Grosz. Her gothic and ancestral settings, influenced by some retrò atmospheres are defined by strong and dark lines. Music, gaiety and oddities are the only weapons of these fancy fellows, to defeat their mocking fate.

Elena Rapa trasporta su carta e su tela un personalissimo e variegato immaginario. Scalfisce con la china e con colore acrilico, i volti e le espressioni di personaggi bizzarri, animali buffi che si articolano in una natura incontaminata e variopinta. Sono illustrazioni che narrano storie complesse, racconti chiassosi per adulti dove si condensano emozioni come la gioia e la malinconia, la paura e l'amore. In questo universo bislacco realizzato con la sovrapposizione di pennellate magistralmente stese c'è spazio per i riferimenti alla pittura di Bosh, Goya e alle ciniche rappresentazioni di Grosz. Sono ambienti goticheggianti, ancestrali, che traggono ispirazioni da velate atmosfere retrò definite da linee spesse di colore scuro. Musica, allegria e stranezze diventono le uniche armi, di questi stravaganti figuri, per vincere le beffe di uno strano destino.

Ester Grossi Ester Grossi is an italian painter and graphic designer born in 1981 in Avezzano(AQ). In the 2000 she got a high school diploma of Fashion, Design and Decor. She earned a bachelor’s degree of Television, Cinema and Multimedia Production at the DAMS of Bologna, where she lives and works as painter, illustrator and graphic designer. Since 2008 she is one of the artists promoted by MUSAE (Urban Museum for young art) and ARTEINGENUA in Italy and Europe. He designed posters for the Imaginaria Film Festival, and covers for bands such as “A classic education”. At the moment, she cooperates with the Moustache Style collective, a cross-media project: web agency, blog/vlog, online boutique.

Funeral is a personal thought on mourning, about the funeral as a rite. The idea of Funeral comes from Ester Grossi's passion for the american tv series Six Feet Under, at the time of the earthquake (April 2009) in the Italian region of Abruzzi, where she was born. Besides the references at a narrative level, her paintings have been influenced by the atmosphere and the color choice of this TV series, together with the idea of representing a funeral with a little bit of dark humor and surrealism. People whose identities and names we ignore, find themselves at a funeral. Relatives, friends, acquantainces, they all eye each other up, their faces revealing their emotions: some people sad, some others absentminded. Who’s dead? Maybe the spectator him/herself. These characters all share the same space, that is, the typical American cemetery with bodies buried “six feet under”; a place that, made so essential and because of its colors, appears unfinished and surreal. The eye inevitably looks for the “other” place that one can sense but that doesn’t exist; we are talking about the feeling of the so called Dream Pop art, both in painting (Hopper) and in music. The represented space is not a fictitious one but it clearly refers to reality, although it wants to come out of the canvas. As Dream Pop art, the atmosphere is not decadent, it is actually a near-death atmosphere. The funeral is still a rite of passage.

Ester Grossi Ester Grossi (Avezzano, 1981) si dedica da anni alla pittura e dal 2008 è tra i giovani artisti promossi dal MUSAE (Museo Urbano Sperimentale d’Arte Emergente) e ARTEINGENUA. Ha all’attivo diverse mostre personali (CAOS MUSEUM di Terni, Galleria Spazio Gianni Testoni La 2000+45 di Bologna) e collettive, in Italia e all’estero (Butterbrot Project a Berlino e Art Live a New York). In qualità di illustratrice ha realizzato manifesti per festival di cinema (Imaginaria Film Festival) e cover per album di band musicali (A Classic Education). Attualmente si dedica anche alla grafica prestampa, collaborando con il collettivo Moustache Style(un cross media project: web agency, blog/vlog, boutique online).

Funeral è una riflessione personale sul lutto, sul funerale come rituale. L'idea di Funeral proviene dalla passione di Ester Grossi per la serie tv americana Six Feet Under, ai tempi del terremoto in Abruzzo, regione di provenienza dell'artista. Oltre ai riferimenti narrativi, i suoi dipinti sono stati influenzati dall'atmosfera e dalla scelta cromatica utilizzate nella serie, insieme all'idea di rappresentare un funerale con un pizzico di ironia e surrealismo. Persone di cui ignoriamo i nomi e le identità si ritrovano durante la cerimonia. Parenti, amici, ereditieri, si scambiano sguardi e i loro volti ne tradiscono le emozioni: alcuni sono tristi, altri sovrappensiero. Chi è il morto? Forse lo stesso spettatore. Tutti questi personaggi condividono lo stesso spazio, vale a dire il tipico cimitero americano in cui i corpi vengono sepolti "sei piedi sottoterra"; un luogo che, reso essenziale nei colori, appare infinito e surreale. L'occhio cerca inevitabilmente "l'aldilà", che può essere sentito ma che in realtà non esiste. E questo richiama il sentimento della cosidetta arte Dream Pop, quella della musica e dei dipinti di Hopper. Lo spazio rappresentato non è fittizio, ma si riferisce chiaramente alla realtà, sebbene sembri voler evadere dalla tela. Come nel Dream Pop, l'atmosfera non è decadente, ma è davvero una sensazione di "quasi-morte". Il funerale è un rituale di passaggio.

Arrington De Dyoniso As he describes himself in "Mani Malaikat", one of the tracks from his latest disc, Arrington de Dionyso is an omnivorous beast, "encountering worlds unseen", translating these visions through his instinctual artistic production. The delicacy and lightness of watercolor climbs to a multiform terrestrial paradise populated by feline and raven-headed beasts, bodies tangled in unlikely poses with strong and determined colors that dazzle the eye. This shamanic world
of Arrington's drags us through a symbolic bestiary, at once mystical and Dionysian, where the primitivism of simplified form is suddenly full of messages, symbols, telling stories and reports drawing upon an ancient power of storytelling that arrives from medieval folklore and myth to contemporary comix. On closer inspection, this Pandora's jar draws its imagery from something pertaining to each individual part of the human species. In fact, Arrington's artistic approach is directly connected to this instrinsic tension and exclusive property of man that attempts to catalog the entire universe with its multiplicity of forms, structures, and mechanisms. His oeuvre brings to mind a kind of primitivism in which bestiality subjugates reason, or rather, the need to enclose knowledge through the name, the sign, the signifier. Like a god floating over land and sea, this artist from Olympia shapes consciousness by investing his creatures with a disarming sacredness, rising almost pedagogically as if his paintings were a paleolithic post-modern graffiti, soaked in mythology but with its awareness rooted in our ever more urban be-ing. His art, painting or music as it may be, is but a means by which to break through the veil of Maya (Perception), and reach, through a ritual in which Arrington is shaman and catalyst, for the Truth. A profoundly spiritual opera, this work of the "Old Time Relijun" bandleader, in which the Flesh returns to being Word, or rather, the ancestral Roar that shakes the conscience of each one of us, inducing the primordial shudder of the maieutics to give birth to reality.

Come egli stesso si definisce in "Mani Malaikat", uno dei brani del suo ultimo lavoro da solista, Arrington de Dionyso è una bestia onnivora e mutante che "s'imbatte in mondi mai visti" e ne traduce le visioni attraverso l'istintiva produzione artistica. La delicatezza e la leggereza del’acquerello si arrampicano ad un multiforme “paradiso” terrestre popolato da creature bestiali, teste di corvo e feline, corpi attorcigliati in improbabili pose sfolgoranti di colori forti e decisi. Questo il mondo in cui Arrington, con fare quasi sciamanico, ci trascina, un bestiario simbolico, mistico e dionisiaco al tempo stesso in cui il primitivismo della forma, la semplificazione del tratto si carica di messaggi, simboli, racconta storie e relazioni attingendo alla potenza della narrazione che dal medioevo arriva al fumetto contemporaneo. A ben vedere, il vaso di Pandora dal qualche attinge il suo immaginario è quello che appartiene ad ogni singolo individuo facente parte della specie umana. L'approccio artistico di Arrington è infatti direttamente collegato a quell'intrinseca tensione, di proprietà esclusiva dell'uomo, alla catalogazione dell'universo con le sue molteplici forme, le sue strutture e i suoi meccanismi. Un fare arte, il suo, che richiama una sorta di primitivismo nel quale la bestialità si soggioga alla ragione, o meglio al bisogno di racchiudere lo scibile attraverso il nome, il segno. Alla stregua di una divinità fluttuante su terra e mare, l'artista americano plasma il suo inconscio investendo le sue creature di una sacralità disarmante, che assurge quasi a modello pedagogico, un po' come se i suoi dipinti fossero dei graffiti paleolitici post-moderni, intrisi però di una mitologia e di una consapevolezza radicate più che mai nel nostro essere "urbano". L'arte (pittura o musica che sia) non è che un mezzo con il quale sfondare il velo di Maya della percezione e giungere, attraverso un rituale di cui Arrington si fa sciamano e catalizzatore, alla verità. Un'opera profondamente spirituale quindi, quella dell'ex leader degli Old Time Relijun, nella quale la carne torna ad essere Verbo, o per meglio dire "ruggito" ancestrale che scuote la coscienza di ognuno di noi, e in un sussulto primordiale la induce maieuticamente a partorirne la propria realtà.

Artists we're taking with us: RIOT QUEER

Riot Queer. A huge gallery full of portraits- so systematic as to appear as a scientific catalogue - provocative, scary, almost surreal and sensual women with cerulean faces. They are dolls with glass eyes, clear like mirrors but paradoxically bursting with life, blood, flesh and bones. A delicate watercolour technique melts with the irreverence and boldness of these scandalous muses, heroines of seduction able to talk about pleasure, dread, imagination. The body- having always caused irritation, unease, reaction within society- is now cut and mutilated by Riot Queer; it turns into something able to convey subliminal messages, signs of fragility , a sense of transgression through marks, words, gesture language, postures. The artist writes stories on the skin: the fragmented bodies of his subjects become like maps to be explored, decoded, places into which one could sink and then loose themselves among crowns of flowers, skulls, nails, blood, butterflies and tits. Bodies that want to escape the rules, want to be other in respect to the social organization and prevailing power. These bodies do not want to be trapped any longer within the quiet boundaries of an accepted, forced, conventional and standardized corporeity; they offer themselves as testing grounds for experimentation- they become expression itself. The references to underground illustration, American tattoo art from the 50’ies, Mexican art, punk music, fetish and soft-core are obvious. Siouxies, Primal Scream and Lou Reed provide the background sound of this scenario, while the audience cannot be but hooked by the new millennium pin-ups.

Riot Queer Una vasta galleria di ritratti, tanto sistematica da apparire quasi una catalogazione scientifica, conturbanti, orrorifiche, surreali e sensuali donne dai volti cerulei. Bambole dagli occhi vitrei, così limpidi da riuscire quasi a specchiarsi paradossalmente palpitanti di vita, di sangue, di carne e di ossa. La delicatezza dell’acquerello si fonde con l’irriverenza e la sfrontatezza delle sue scandalose muse, delle eroine della seduzione che riescono a parlarci di piacere, terrore e fantasie. Il corpo, che nella società ha da sempre creato irritazione, disagio, reazione, da Riot Queer viene tagliato, mutilato e, attraverso i segni, le parole, il linguaggio dei gesti, delle posture, trasmette messaggi subliminali, fragilità e trasgressione allo stesso tempo. Sulla pelle l’artista scrive storie e i corpi frammentati diventano delle mappe da esplorare, decodificare nelle quali sprofondare e perdersi fra corone di fiori, teschi, serpenti, sangue, farfalle e mammelle. Corpi che vogliono fuggire dagli schemi, vogliono essere altro rispetto ai corpi dell’organizzazione sociale e dei poteri sogettivanti, corpi che non vogliono più essere racchiusi nelle tranquille barriere di una corporeità accettata, imposta, convenzionale, e omologata ma si offrono come campo d’azione, come il campo di un’esercitazione, di una sperimentazione, diventano espressione. E ritroviamo i tanti riferimenti all’illustrazione underground, al tatoo americano anni ’50, e all’arte messicana, al punk ma anche al mondo del fetish e del softcore, il tutto mixato a suon di Siouxies, Primal Scream e Lou Reed, messo in pasto agli occhi di noi spettatori inesorabilmente stregati da queste pin-up del nuovo millennio.

Artists we're taking with us: CLAUDIA GIANNULI

Claudia Giannuli. The “Nu Dolls” (as defined by Prof. Guido Corrazziari), childish and mature women at the same time, are completely white. Their candour and purity clash against an expressiveness that portraits deep loneliness, everyday-life drama, mourning. They are curved with soft lines, attractive. Their tales work just like sharp blades though, often being both ironic and dangerous. These dolls, for adults, defy our glance proudly. At times it feels like they make fun of us while at the same time being shameless, erotic, seductive and paradoxically naive. The sculptural groups consist mainly of two subjects. The male element has merely a token role, often represented by an animal (“Ops”) or by a premature or unwanted creature in utero (“Pop Up”), even crucified (“I love u”): the classical/traditional iconography of crucifixion is twisted- the screaming and lacerated Christ is completely subdued by a quivering Magdalena, who is both sadistic and wicked.

Claudia Giannuli. Le “NU DOLLS” (come le ha definite il Prof. Guido Corraziari) un po’ bimbe un po’ donne mature ciniche e insolenti sono di un bianco assoluto. Il loro candore e la loro purezza lottano con un’ espressività che narra della solitudine profonda, della drammaticità dell’esistenza quotidiana, di lutti. Le loro forme sono così tondeggianti, morbide e attraenti eppure i loro racconti funzionano come delle lame affilate, spesso ironiche eppure pericolose. Queste bambole per adulti sfidano fiere il nostro sguardo e a tratti sembrano burlarsi di noi, senza pudori, erotiche, seduttrici ed innocenti allo stesso tempo. In tutti i gruppi scultorei, il più delle volte composti da due personaggi, l’elemento maschile è ridotto al ruolo di comparsa, rappresentato spesso da un animale (“Ops!), da una creatura ancora in grembo indesiderata o prematura (“PoP UP”), oppure come nel caso di “I love you” viene direttamente “messo In croce”. Una sorta di profano e quotidiano stravolgimento dell’iconografia classica della crocifissione, in cui il Cristo straziato e urlante è totalmente soggiogato da una Maddalena palpitante a tratti sadica a tratti perversa.

Artists we're taking with us: MANUEL DONADA

Manuel Donada, with his backpack full of colours, on board his whacky spacecraft and in the company of some characters escaped from a cartoon by Anna and Barbera, has passed by many planets and stars. He has experienced new realities and found new ways to change the real world by turning it into a sparkling visual artefact. Just like a modern scientist of the era 2.0 Manuel travels the world, observing reality and recording the pulsing life of the streets and in the cafés; he studies the behaviour of mankind, its obsessions, its ticks. Once he is finished, he analyzes and processes everything, distilling its essence and reconstructing it for us as a wonderful OGM world. At first glance his characters could seem to be innocent and frivolous retro cartoons (his style recalls the cartoons from the 60’s), but soon enough one becomes aware of being surrounded by funny transgenic subjects. Cloned, repeated expressions becoming almost masks, thus making these little monsters anything but innocent.

Manuel Donada: A bordo della sua stramba astronave, zaino strabordante di colori sulle spalle, e in compagnia dei suoi personaggi scappati da un cartoon di Hanna & Barbera, Manuel Donada ha attraversato centinaia di pianeti e stelle, ha sperimentato nuovi mondi e nuovi modi di stravolgere il mondo reale e l’ha trasformato in uno scintillante artefatto visivo. Come un errante moderno scienziato dell’era 2.0 Manuel gira il mondo, osserva la realtà, registra la vita pulsante delle strade, dei caffè, osserva i comportamenti, i modi, le manie, i "tic" dell’umanità, e poi conclusa la raccolta, analizza, macina e frulla il tutto, distillandolo e riconsegnandolo ai nostri occhi come un meraviglioso mondo di OGM. Al primo sguardo sembrerebbero innocenti e frivoli cartoons dal gusto decisamente retrò (evidente è il riferimento stilistico ai cartoni animati anni ’60) ma ci si accorge ben presto di essere circondati piuttosto da buffi personaggi transgenici. Espressioni clonate e reiterate quasi a diventare maschere, tali da rendere questi mostriciattoli tutt’altro che innocenti.
